Astoria & Columbia River Spring Chinook Salmon Fishing Guide

Some of the most prized and best-tasting fish to eat in the Pacific Northwest, and Captain Mike’s personal favorite, is by far the Columbia River spring Chinook salmon (a.k.a. as “Springers”). At Hazen’s Guide Service, we are a Salmon fishing guide service offering charter spring Chinook salmon fishing trips. We operate our boats between Astoria and just north of Portland in the Scappoose and St. Helens area on the Columbia River. The Springer salmon season will often begin in late March through mid-April on the main Columbia River. Later on, through July we also fish the Columbia’s tributaries like the Multnomah Channel on the Willamette River. Spring Chinook, pound for pound, are the hardest fighting fish in the Pacific Northwest. Because of this, you can expect an exciting charter fishing trip with us.

The Spring Chinook Salmon Fishery

After spending 2-3 years out in the Pacific Ocean, spring Chinook salmon migrate up the Columbia River. These iconic salmon are headed for the spawning beds on tributaries as far as Idaho and Canada. We’re able to catch these beauties while they are fresh out of the salty ocean waters when they are still full of natural oils and that bright pink colored meat, which is why they taste so delicious! It’s not unusual these fish can sell for upwards of $40-50 a pound or more at local seafood markets.

How We Catch Spring Chinook Salmon

Spring Chinook Salmon are caught by trolling small herring and anchovies or anchor fishing with bait wrapped Kwikfish. We strategically place our 22’ River Wild aluminum power boat in known fish travel lanes to ensure the most bites.

Book a Guided Fishing Trip for Chinook Salmon

When you book your charter fishing trip with us, we’ll frequently launch from John Day, Westport, Clatskanie, St. Helens or Scappoose boat ramps. Our launch location, time, and hours on the water will be determined by many factors including the timing of tides, recent rain, current river levels, fishing conditions, and reports. We will arrange where to meet and go over the plan for fishing a day or two before your trip. All you need to arrive with is your Oregon fishing license and species tags, comfortable clothing for all weather types and lunch and snacks for the day. We provide everything else you need to catch monster fish, such as rods, reels, tackle, bait, and safety equipment. We’ll even fillet and package your fish for you to take home and enjoy!
